Oracle Arena pays tribute to Santa Fe victims; Rockets discuss plans for Game 5

Posted on by

Oracle Arena paid tribute to the victims of the Santa Fe High School tragedy with a moment of silence before Game 3 between the Houston Rockets and Golden State Warriors.

The Rockets are discussing plans to honor the victims and families of Friday’s school shooting, which happened about 35 miles south of Houston.

They are expected to do something for Thursday’s Game 5 of the Western Conference finals against the Warriors at Toyota Center, which is the first time they will have a home game since the shootings.

“Hopefully our team and our organization, I’m sure we’re going to try to do things to try to help those families that are affected to give them those bright spots in times like this.”

“He looked outstanding today,” Wilks said, via Mike Jurecki on Twitter. “It’s good to have him back out there just flying around. The things that he’s doing right now is pretty exciting.”

As Wilks said, you can’t make too much out of what goes on in May but a little excitement is understandable given Johnson’s importance to Arizona’s chances and the long stretch they went without seeing him on the field.

The networks have a clear interest in developing and implementing such technologies ASAP, given that new broadcast contracts will become effective in 2022 (for Monday Night Football) and 2023 (for all other packages). Having the ability to deliver images with immediacy will lay the foundation for the placement of bets between whistle and snap, resulting in more people watching, more people betting, and everyone making more money.

Joe Namath Defends Kaepernick ‘He’s Good Enough to Be Signed!’

Posted on by

Colin Kaepernick is now getting support (sorta) from one of the greatest QBs of all time with Joe Namath saying the guy DESERVES to be on an NFL roster.

Broadway Joe appeared on Varney & Co. on FOX Business and went to bat for Kaep and Eric Reid who have both filed grievances against the NFL claiming they’ve been blackballed for kneeling.

Wide receiver: Julian Edelman, Chris Hogan and Malcolm Mitchell are all coming off injury-marred seasons. The shot on Matthews in the slot helps restore some depth with Amendola and Cooks gone, but the Patriots should look to add a pass-catcher who can make big plays at either wideout or tight end.

That didn’t mean teams didn’t sniff around about the All-Pro safety. Seahawks general manager John Schneider said after the draft a number of clubs called about Thomas, and NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport reported the Cowboys balked at giving up a second-round pick for the safety.

With those talks falling through, Schneider reiterated Thursday on 710 ESPN Seattle that he believes Thomas wants to be part of the Seahawks organization.

Shepley’s play has him ranked as one of the CFL’s top prospects but he has his sights set even higher — to potentially make an NFL roster.

Ryan, who will turn 33 on May 17, was entering the final year of a five-year, $103.75 million extension he signed in July 2013.

Minnesota’s Kirk Cousins set the previous record for average annual salary ($28 million), followed by San Francisco’s Jimmy Garoppolo ($27.5 million) and Detroit’s Matthew Stafford ($27 million).

In order to make it work, the Packers need to draft a potential outside upgrade from Geromino Allison and DeAngelo Yancey to start opposite Adams. As good as Nelson had been in the slot of late, Cobb is the more traditional impact player at the position. The chemistry with Rodgers is there, too, and the Packers wisely figured Cobb could be the better producer for them in the short term.

Cobb is the final year of his contract with a chance to prove he remains a vital cog in Green Bay’s passing game. The one-time Pro Bowler will take advantage of it.

NFL Draft 2018: Apologetic Josh Allen ‘in a panic’ after offensive tweets surface

Posted on by

Potential No. 1 overall pick Josh Allen has apologized for offensive tweets that were uncovered on the eve of the 2018 NFL Draft.

“If I could go back in time, I would never have done this in a heartbeat,” Allen told ESPN on Thursday. “At the time, I obviously didn’t know how harmful it was and now has become.

“I hope you know and others know I’m not the type of person I was at 14 and 15 that I tweeted so recklessly. … I don’t want that to be the impression of who I am, because that is not me. I apologize for what I did.”

Eh. Only one 2016 playoff team is among the eight that will make the trip (the Miami Dolphins) this season. The list also includes the Cleveland Browns, the only team that has a worse winning percentage this decade than the Jaguars (.254). The Los Angeles Rams, who last made a playoff appearance in 2004, are also on the schedule.

Historically, these games are not among the NFL’s best, although they were more competitive and interesting in 2016 than their previous composite.

Doesn’t seem to matter to the Brits, huh?

Nope. They sold out the two games at Wembley and two at Twickenham Stadium in short order. That means more than 300,000 fans will see NFL games in person in London this season.

Is that 300,000 different people or 300,000 in total attendance?

The latter. What’s interesting is that, according to Waller, about 40,000 people bought tickets to all four games. You know what that sounds like, don’t you?

Here’s looking at all the games on the Patriots’ 2018 slate and an early projection of how their season will play out.

Toughest tests: The Jaguars and Steelers present the toughest road games, but Aaron Rodgers’ Packers and Kirk Cousins’ Vikings will be excellent duels with Tom Brady on his home field. The Texans also gave the Patriots a test with Deshaun Watson in New England last season.dolphins_035

The Yankees’ injury list grew again Saturday morning.

Posted on by

During his sixth inning plate appearance, Andujar got behind in the count 1-2 facing Blue Jays righty Marcus Stroman. From there, he fouled off a pitch to stay alive, he took a slider in the dirt that evened the count and then he got a mistake pitch … a 2-2 hanging slider.

Andujar smoked it over the head of Blue Jays rookie left fielder Lourdes Gurriel Jr., for a double that cleared the bases in a seven-run inning that was the knockout punch of a  9-1 win.

“That’s a big-time at-bat off Stroman there,” Boone said. “Especially getting to two strikes and Stroman is trying to expand (the strike zone). His plate coverage was excellent.

That pressure didn’t carry over into the second period because the Devils spent nearly half of it with a player in the penalty box.

The Devils took four minor penalties during the period, giving the Lightning four power plays. But Schneider stood tall, making 18 saves to keep it 1-0. The Lightning earned a fifth power play to start the third period when defenseman Andy Greene was called for cross checking in the closing minute of the second.

Nikita Kucherov then doubled the lead by scoring from the point at 12:27 of the third, making it 2-0 with his fifth goal of the series.

The Devils finally broke through with 3:00 to play in regulation, when a Kyle Palmieri shot from the point found the back of the net under Vasilevskiy. Patrick Maroon received credit for the goal for tipping the shot.

“Yeah, of course,” Andujar said. “(Torres has) been playing third. That’s good for him. If he comes over to play with us, we’re going to receive him with open arms. He’s a good friend and a really good ballplayer who has a lot of talent.”

The Lightning won the series, 4-1, eliminating the Devils for the postseason.

Cory Schneider kept the Devils alive all game, stopping 35 of he 37 shots he faced while anchoring five successful penalty kills by the Devils.

But Lightning goalie Andrei Vasilevskiy was one save better, saving 26 of 27 shots to end the Devils’ season.

The Lightning struck for the opening goal 8:07 into the first period, thanks to a heavy forecheck and a failure to clear by the Devils.

Lightning forwards Anthony Cirelli and Yanni Gourde forced a turnover behind the Devils’ net with their forecheck before Cirelli dropped a pass to defenseman Mikhail Sergachev at the point.

The Dallas Cowboys backslid in 2017, in no small part because quarterback Dak Prescott did as well.

Posted on by

The Bills, for example, could send their two first-rounders (Nos. 12 and 22), their second-round pick (53) and the third-round pick they acquired from the Browns (65) and make what amounts to a fair swap on the Jimmy Johnson chart by giving up 2,635 points of draft capital for the second overall pick, which is worth 2,600 points. By the Stuart chart, the Bills would be paying $1.70 on the dollar, which is less than the Jets paid to move up, but more in line with recent trade-ups for quarterbacks.

A culture change has been the plan all along. It was the reason the Dolphins moved on from Suh, according to the Miami Herald, and the reason Jay Ajayi was sent to the Philadelphia Eagles in October.

The Los Angeles Rams have scooped up loads of talent this offseason — including Suh — who were castoffs from other teams for reasons beyond just their football abilities. The Rams also traded for cornerbacks Aqib Talib and Marcus Peters, and are reportedly interested in receiver Odell Beckham Jr.

There’s risk for the Rams, but having talented players with big personalities is a better problem to have to deal with than having a team that lacks talent but stays in line.

The Dolphins seem to be betting on the idea that it’s easier to win and maximize talent when players are ready to buy in. And that’s a nice thought, but it’s not easy to win games when the other team is just — well — better.

Glenn can play at a high level when healthy, but that when healthy caveat keeps getting bigger and bigger. Glenn missed 10 games last year in Buffalo, and the seventh-year veteran has been sidelined for almost half of the last two seasons.

And while there’s some talent at tackle in this year’s draft, it’s a relatively down year at the position. Whether it’s McGlinchey’s low ceiling, Williams’ injury history and disappointing 2017 season or Orlando Brown’s disastrous combine, there aren’t any sure things in 2018.

The last thing the Bengals need is to head into September in the same shape they were in last December—with Andy Dalton running for his life.

With that in mind, are the Giants considering passing on a quarterback with the second overall pick to take NC State defensive end Bradley Chubb They have a track record of valuing edge rushers as premium players going back to the Bill Parcells days, a stretch that included general manager Dave Gettleman’s first run within the organization from 1999-2011, albeit as pro personnel director. patriots_004

Jordy Nelson: I can still run, I can still catch

Posted on by

Wide receiver Jordy Nelson didn’t take long to recover from the little shock to the system he got when the Packers released him earlier this week.

Nelson landed in Oakland on Wednesday and signed a two-year deal with the Raiders on Thursday. He said there were other trips planned, but that he liked the fit with Raiders quarterback Derek Carr and that things worked out contractually to make them unnecessary.

Beckham’s other video may not draw such a positive response from the Giants, but at least he won’t have to worry about a delayed response to 2014 when he and Ogletree get back on the field together.

The top three teams the Metropolitan division have all but guaranteed themselves playoff spots. It’s a mess right now Edmonton, but will head coach McLellan pay the price?Funeral Service 2 pm, Thursday, February 9 at Reppert Funeral Home with Bro.16 of 3rd period – Shot by -Edouard.

It came down to my desire to win football games, Cousins said. Minnesota appeared to be that fit for a lot of reasons. Ultimately the leadership of the organization is what set it apart.

Cousins said he’s looking forward to April 16, when he finally gets a chance to talk football with the Vikings’ coaches, and that he’d prefer offseason rules that give the players more time to work — especially when he needs to learn a new offense.

He’s given the organization everything he has, at least give him one more season, Jones said. It’s not going to hurt the team. He’s going to help you. He could have given you one more year.

But at the end of the day, it’s a business. You should never be surprised. I’ve seen Peyton Manning and Charles Woodson and so many other people get released.

While the Packers might have made the offer, their interest in other receivers suggests they simply wanted to move on. In that case, going low wasn’t as much an offer to bring Nelson back, but an attempt to make sure he didn’t.49ers_008

Vesey, Zuccarello lead Rangers to 6-3 win over Hurricanes

Posted on by

Zuccarello extended his goal-scoring streak to three games.

If this line does get a little frosty, I’m wagering he stays with Barkov and potentially reunites with Jonathan Huberdeau. He could be a difference-maker for your opening playoff bout. Bonus: The Panthers have more games remaining than anyone on the playoff bubble, including seven contests over the next two weeks.

Julius Randle has locked in as one of the most productive players in the NBA for the last month, averaging 21.3 points, 9.2 rebounds, 4.3 assists and 1.6 combined blocks/steals during his last 12 games.

Larry Nance Jr. has taken over as an impact player, arguably the second-best player on the Cavaliers since Tristan Thompson joined Love on the sidelines. Nance has averaged 16.8 points (61.7 FG%, 75.0 FT%), 12.0 rebounds, 1.8 steals and 1.3 assists during his last four games.

Sounds like a character from a Star Wars novelization, playing lately like a top-liner for the Sharks. Donskoi is second on the Sharks in scoring chances per 60 (37.55) and even-strength goals per 60 (2.92), trailing only Evander Kane in both categories. He’s recently taken up residence on the wing of Kane and Joe Pavelski, and we don’t expect the production to slow.

The Colts have a ton of money under the salary cap, but they have been eerily quiet. With the Jaguars being winners in the division, the Texans (Aaron Colvin) and the Titans (Malcolm Butler) made early splashes with impact cornerbacks.

Cleveland didn’t wait until March 14 to reshape the roster. The Browns spent the days just before the legal tampering period opened making several big trades. The team acquired quarterback Tyrod Taylor, wide receiver Jarvis Landry, and cornerback Damarious Randall, and jettisoned quarterback DeShone Kizer and Danny Shelton. Altogether, it cost the team several mid-round selections, but the Browns added a few 2019 picks along the way.

The quarterback market was affected by the Browns’ moves. Cleveland still has more than $80 million in cap space and plenty of roster reshaping left to do, so it didn’t change free agency too much aside from leaving the Bills without a quarterback and the Packers hungry for more cornerback help.patriots_004

NBA wrap: Bottom-dwelling Magic upset Celtics despite Kyrie Irving’s 40 points

Posted on by

It seemed like a simple solution. Kyrie Irving scored 40 points, the Celtics were at home, playing against the hapless Magic ranked second-to-last in the Eastern Conference. But the improbable happened Sunday in Boston.

Despite Irving’s 40 points, seven rebounds and five assists, the Celtics somehow lost 103-95 as the Magic stole a surprising road win.

Boston held a one-point first-half lead, but the Magic outscored the Celtics 32-12 in the third quarter. Irving tried to lead a fourth-quarter rally, but Orlando held on despite scoring only 13 points in the fourth.

Pistons guard Avery Bradley came in to the night averaging almost 16 points per game, but had just seven points (on 3-of-12 shooting) in a 101-100 loss to the Nets.

Heat (27-19) at Rockets (32-12) at 8 p.m. ET — Houston with James Harden back, defeated the Warriors Saturday night to get back within shouting distance of the Western Conference top seed. The Heat have quietly been rising up the Eastern Conference standings due to balanced scoring and opportunistic defense. Miami, 15-10 on the road, has won nine of its last 11 games.

Butler also missed Saturday’s win over the Raptors, which ended Minnesota’s two-game losing streak. Butler’s injury is not believed to be serious, but at this stage in the season, the Timberwolves are choosing to be cautious.

Crawford, averaging just under 10 points per game, is dealing with a toe injury. Tyus Jones should earn more playing time Monday with Minnesota thin in the backcourt.

Cozart is still using his old shortstop glove — a faded black Wilson A2000 with six years of wear on it. It measures 11.5 inches and is slightly smaller than the typical third baseman’s glove. Cozart keeps one of those in his duffel bag, and he’s gradually breaking it in with daily games of catch.

In Cozart’s Cactus League debut, the Angels’ infield was playing in, and Cleveland’s Ryan Hanigan hit a bolt directly at Cozart. Cozart reached out in self-defense and snagged the liner, fully cognizant that it could just as easily have been a chopper that required him to charge the ball and make an off-balance throw. Such is life at third base.

Miller stops 41 shots, Ducks beat Stars 2-0

Posted on by

The Ducks entered the game tied with the Los Angeles Kings for third place in the Pacific Division, and the Stars are in third in the Central Division. Not surprisingly, there was playoff intensity and caginess at the start. The Ducks went into the power play where Lindholm scored with two shots on goal and got two in eight seconds with the man-advantage, their only four shots in the period.

We played so well the last two nights, we needed to get rewarded, Hitchcock said. As well as we played tonight, we probably played better (Wednesday) night.

At this time of the year, with so many teams involved in the West in the playoff race, every shift matters, every period matters, every game matters.

Tobias Rieder, making his first appearance with the Kings after arriving from Arizona in a trade Wednesday, played on Los Angeles’ third line. . After three power plays in the first period, there were none in the final two periods. . Lehtonen said it felt like a playoff game: It’s going to be like this the next 20 games. It’s exciting for the players and the fans.

According to left winger Johnny Gaudreau, who had a goal and two assists against the Coyotes, the Flames are looking at every game as a must-win situation.

There’s a tiny difference between punts muffed from left-footed punters vs. right-footed punters, but it will probably be negated by the fact that neither team is facing anything new.

But when Belichick finally walks away from the NFL, the rise of left-footed punters appears to be another way his legacy has impacted the game — whether he calls it a coincidence or not.

Anthony Davis vigorously punched his arm through the air as the final horn provided a fourth straight triumphant ending to a fourth straight prolific performance. The All-Star then faced the exuberant New Orleans crowd with both arms raised and began exchanging high fives with beckoning fans along the edge of the court.

Ryan Shazier is setting the record straight.

Posted on by

The Steelers linebacker took to Twitter on Monday to clarify the status of his rehabilitation after a report Sunday stated he had “regained movement in his legs” and “begun a regular walking routine.”

Wentz is a special talent, no doubt. But at the moment, he’s dealing with the base concerns about long-term durability, the first hurdle to a consistent, successful QB career in the NFL. Foles, meanwhile, has the unmistakable glean of the Lombardi Trophy in his hands.

Foles also has the advantage of being drafted when Pederson was the Eagles’ quarterbacks coach in 2012; and of being coveted as a backup with the Chiefs because of his old connection to Pederson; and being traded to rejoin Pederson.

Sure, Pederson was in charge when the Eagles drafted Wentz, but the coach has had more time to see Foles’ evolution and knows exactly what he has in him now. It’s not about comparing what Wentz did earlier in the season and what Foles did late in the season.

It wouldn’t shock me to see the Giants work out a trade to move up one spot, especially if we start to hear reports of the Browns leaning toward the UCLA QB despite his disinterest in playing in Cleveland. The period of time between the combine and the start of free agency is going to be fascinating for this team; imagine if the Giants move up to No. 1 and also trade Eli Manning to a team like the Jaguars during the first week of March.

Structure is everything with NFL contracts, since the deals aren’t fully guaranteed. Any Redskins offer with less than $40 million fully guaranteed at signing won’t be taken seriously by Cousins’ camp. The five-year, $75 million contract the Redskins gave free-agent cornerback Josh Norman last April with a player-friendly structure had $36.5 million fully guaranteed at signing.

Allen indicated that the Redskins are committed to getting Cousins signed before the July 15 deadline that franchise players have for long-term deals. It’s probably going to take a contract in the same ballpark as the five-year extension Andrew Luck received from the Colts last offseason, which reset the NFL pay scale, to lock up Cousins long-term. Luck’s contract averages $24.594 million per year and contains $87 million in guarantees, of which $47 million was fully guaranteed at signing.
